Silent Echoes at Orford Ness

12 August 2025

Silent Echoes, featuring her unique Fire Etching technique, Aburidashi. The collection draws inspiration from Orford Nessknown for its legacy as the UK's only site of atomic experimentation. Through this exhibition, Homma invites viewers to reflect on the hidden histories and unspoken memories that linger in the landscape, offering a profound meditation on the passage of time and the remnants of secrecy.

Aburidashi, a traditional Japanese technique also used in espionage, is central to Homma’s process. Unlike conventional drawing methods that apply pigment to paper, Homma uses fire to etch her images into the surface, leaving behind burn marks that resonate with the charged history of Orford Ness. The technique, which reveals invisible ink when exposed to heat, mirrors the process of uncovering hidden narratives that have long remained suppressed or forgotten.

Through this unconventional approach, Homma explores not only the visible traces of Orford Ness’ atomic legacy but also the invisible, intangible memories that echo through the landscape. In doing so, she acknowledges the complexity of the subject matter, recognizing her own partial understanding of a world marked by chaos and uncertainty. The artist's use of fire as a medium serves as a powerful metaphor for the destructive yet revealing forces at play in both history and contemporary life.
